The Arise and Shine Churches manage the St. Dorcas Orphanage
The St. Dorcas Orphanage is located in rural Kenya, off the beaten track, close to the Ugandan border at an altitude of 7,000ft. The closest town, Bungoma is approximately 30 miles away. The orphanage currently houses 23 children from the age of 3 years old, however it has the capacity to take up to 50 children. The children are cared for by Matron Juliette who lives in the orphanage and each child goes to school.
Angela Jenkins, Tockwith Church Warden, heard about the situation via the Bungoma Calling charity supported by her church. As the MD of H&A, a children’s toiletry company in the UK, it made sense to Angela that some of the profits made selling products to children in the UK should be shared with children who are significantly in need. H&A allocated funds to build an orphanage on a new site with facilities to improve the children’s quality of life and also give them security.
Fundraising for the Future
Fundraising for future orphanage needs has already begun. Staff at H&A completed a ‘Biking to Bungoma for Beds Challenge’ to raise money to buy bunk beds for the children. The company cycled 4,210 miles on static bikes, the distance from their office in York to the location of the Kipcheria Orphanage in Bungoma, Kenya. The challenge took three weeks to complete and the team raised over £3,000 to supply beds and mattresses for the orphans.
All fundraising monies have been controlled throughout the build via Paul Grewer ACMA, Finance Director at H&A. Paul personally overseas all payments to ensure monies donated are sent directly to the orphanage. Paul has visited the orphanage in April 2013 & March 2014.
Latest update August 2015
In 2015 the Encounter Bungoma 2015 mission stayed at the orphanage. See the updates here.
